When my school was able to purchase SmartBoards and projectors for all the teachers I was so excited. I was fortunate enough to be one of the few teachers the year before to have full access to one of the 5 in our building. I realized the incredible potential for this wonderful tool in the classroom. I could spend hours telling you all of the different ways I use this in my classroom daily. It has become a natural part of my teaching. My fellow teachers have come to find out that if you need an internet source, game to play, powerpoint to use on the board, in any topic, I will find it. Let me share an example of how I used this wonderful resource just this month.
My students have been reviewing musical rhythm and meter. We used the interactive board to simply write on it and label the musical notation. After a period of review, we accessed the website www.classicsforkids.com where there is a section with games. Within this there is one that will let students create their own melody but it requires that they complet each measure with the correct number of beats thus understanding the meter. We then also tried another site, www.philtulga.com/counter.html, that lets students fill in measures with rhythms only and then will play back their rhythm with voice either counting, using Kodaly method, and other methods. Additionally we have used the notation on the board, dragging symbols and creating patterns which we then read.
First of all, my students love writing on the SmartBoard, and the interactive touch capabilities and the larger than life screen, make the activities exciting and engaging.
