2008/10/06 Creativity Outside the Classroom

My involvement in this class has taught me much about the varied ways of presenting material in my classroom that will encourage my students to explore their own creativity. I, like many teachers, am frequently frustrated by my students, when given a creative opportunity, they ask continuously "like this?" "is this right?" "should I do this?" I feel saddened by their fear to try something new and be comfortable with whatever happens.Especially when I believe that I have provided them with guided progression that should make it east for them to explore their own ideas. As others have said in their own posts, our students today are not encouraged to strike out on their own. They are not given permission to step outside of the box.
Since my class is all about sound, reading and performing compositions, and hopefully composing our own. I mentioned in a forum topic that I have always thought about doing podcasts. Although I do not know much about them, only what I have seen my son do in his own classes. One of his teachers uses the site www.gcast.com. They are run by the same people who do garageband.com, a site where you can find podcast safe music to use in your podcast.
I think that a site like this would be a perfect opportunity for my students to record their own performances something like the show "From The Top" which is broadcast on local public radio stations. This radio show highlights young musicians and their talents. With the ease at which we can now record and mix on home computers. It would be an easy transition for students to explore the world of recording and producing their own music.

Perhaps in hearing themselves, they will be excited at the prospects and it will light the fire of creativity!
